50 YEARS OF DOCTOR WHO - ADVENTURES IN TIME AND SPACE!

Saturday 23rd November 1963 saw the broadcast of the very first episode of Doctor Who. Little did they realise that some 50 years later the BBC TV programme would be one of the most popular series on television, watched by over 165 million people worldwide!

As the twelfth incumbent of the TARDIS takes charge this Christmas, our attention turns to the first actor to play the Doctor in those first black and white years…

From light musical comedy to a succession of mean crooks and bullying sergeant-majors, William Hartnell’s long and varied career included a number of iconic British films including Carry On Sergeant, This Sporting Life and Brighton Rock. However, it is for his role as a time-travelling eccentric that he is most fondly remembered.

With the broadcast of a docudrama Adventures in Space and Time, chronicling the genesis of Doctor Who and the life of William Hartnell, Fantom have published a biography of the actor, written by his granddaughter Jessica Carney entitled Who’s There.

"A fascinating and very moving account of a complicated and talented actor. William Hartnell rose from the humblest beginnings to become a heavyweight screen star and, ultimately, an unlikely hero to millions of children as the first Doctor Who.” Says writer and actor Mark Gatiss. “In this 50th anniversary year, it's wonderful to see how Jessica Carney pulls together all the threads of a tangled life in such a sympathetic but honest fashion. Bill was no saint but he emerges as a fully-rounded, difficult and fascinating personality in this splendid biography”.

Hartnell played the very first Doctor from 1963 – 1966, pitting his wits again many foes and monsters including the Daleks and the Cybermen, laying the foundations for what was to become a global institution.

Jessica Carney’s closely researched biography of her grandfather includes stories from many of the hundreds of stars of stage and screen with whom he worked, among them Richard Attenborough, Verity Lambert, Bob Monkhouse, Carole Ann Ford, David Langton and Lindsay Anderson.

Who’s There: The Life and Career of William Hartnell is now available from Fantom Publishing in hardback and on Audio, read by companion actress Anneke Wills.

FORGOTTEN STARS - REVIEWED

Following on from a full page interview in this week's The Stage, Jonathan Croall has received a number of excellent reviews for his new book Forgotten Stars: My Father and the British Silent Film World.

Silent London says that it is a "...lovely written and hugely informative book..." and that "Croall’s affection for his subject is both infectious and useful. I would welcome far more books of this ilk – a tribute to the celebrities of a vanished industry, burnished by familial pride and a passion for silent cinema." You can read the full review here.

Whilst Eric Midwinter from The Third Age magazine says: "In this attractively presented text, Jonathan Croall examines, with clarity and panache, all aspects of the British contribution to silent film and the ups and downs of its switch to sound. Jonathan Croall is a man of letters and theatre... He brings to his task a knowledgeable head and an affectionate heart. It makes for a most absorbing read."

Sheila Steafel’s critically acclaimed autobiography When Harry Met Sheila is now available in paperback.

“The reaction to my book when it came out was more than I could have hoped for.” explains Sheila.  “The most rewarding thing was the response to my style of writing, which seemed to make it not only easy reading but (and i quote) un-put-downable! I was a little trepidatious about having been so self-revealing, but it was noted as refreshingly honest.”

“Anyone reading my memoir will probably be surprised, possibly even shocked by what I have to tell, not only about my personal life, but about how harsh and unglamorous the acting profession can be. Aspiring actors be warned!”

THE MAN WHO INVENTED THE DALEKS - ON AUDIO!

The Daleks are one of the most iconic and fearsome creations in television history. Since their first appearance in 1963, they have simultaneously fascinated and terrified generations of children, their instant success ensuring, and sometimes eclipsing, that of Doctor Who.

They sprang from the imagination of Terry Nation, a failed stand-up comic who became one of the most prolific writers for television that Britain has ever produced.

In October, Fantom will be releasing a brand new audio version of acclaimed cultural historian Alwyn W. Turner's biography. Presented on 4 CDs, and priced £14.99 you can pre-order your copy here.

Terry Nation - The Man Who Invented the Daleks explores the curious and contested origins of Doctor Who's greatest villains, and sheds light on a strange world of ambitious young writers, producers and performers without whom British culture today would look very different.

JONATHAN CROALL'S FORGOTTEN STARS - NOW RELEASED

Following the sensational success of the silent film The Artist, author Jonathan Croall, best known for his widely praised theatrical biographies of John Gielgud and Sybil Thorndike, now focuses on the career of his father - John Stuart.

John Stuart was one of the most popular stars of the British silent cinema, a screen lover who starred opposite all the leading actresses, an actor whose fan club was equal to that of Ivor Novello. Yet although a few of his 55 silent films survive, like most other stars of the 1920s he is all but forgotten today.

Now, drawing on a unique family archive, Jonathan Croall has brought his father back into the spotlight, charting his rapid rise to stardom in vivid detail. He also brings to life many other stars of the day, while exploring the work of directors such as the young Alfred Hitchcock, Maurice Elvey, Anthony Asquith and Victor Saville.

In Forgotten Stars he examines the stars’ working conditions, sheds light on the physical perils of filming, and looks at the pressures the stars faced from their fans, the press, and the lure of Hollywood. He also explores the arguments then raging about the rival merits of stage and screen, and describes the devastating impact of the arrival of the ‘talkies’, which affected so many careers, many of them tragically.

JOHN LEESON'S TWEAKING THE TAIL!

This is the amusing story of a wildly unpredictable career journey...

Not every RADA-trained actor with aspirations to the classical stage expects to find himself an international sci-fi icon in DOCTOR WHO at the end of the day.   Again, not every actor expects to find fulfilment in a parallel profession as an accredited wine educator alongside his work in the theatre, film and TV….and yet again, not every actor expects to find himself appointed to a completely different ‘theatre’ – the Magistrates’ Courts -  sitting in judgement on the right side of the law!

Nobody could be more surprised, perhaps, at the curious turns of fortune that have been dealt to the author revealed in this engaging, often hilarious picture of his life other than the author himself!

This, then, is your invitation to share a kaleidoscope of recollections: the surprise, the triumphs, trials and tribulations of professional work across half a century including repertory and ‘fringe’  theatre work, West End appearances, British TV sitcoms including ‘Dad’s Army’, voiceover work, question setting for ‘Mastermind’, TV commercials at home and abroad….. let alone his insights into the worlds both of wine and of public service as a magistrate.  A passionate cook, too, he’s even found the time to write this book!  Clearly, he needs to slow down!

In 2005 they were still touring, but by then the heady days of teeny-bop hysteria were long gone. Offered a summer run of 33 holiday camp dates, the band took the fast buck and subsequently entered into uncharted territory…

SHEILA STEAFEL'S BASTARDS - OUT NOW IN PRINT AND ON AUDIO

Comedienne Sheila Steafel best known for her roles in The Frost Report, The Good Old Days and The Ghosts of Motley Hall joins Fantom Publishing to finally reveal those Bastards!

When I read through the final draft of my autobiography, I decided to take out several anecdotes about my personal life, simply because they seemed a sort of indulgence, and didn’t add to what I wanted to say about my life and my career. They were hiccups along the way with some attacks worse than others, but all were finally ‘got rid’ (as my cousin Lillian used to say). I put them in a file which I called BASTARDS for my own amusement, and thought no more about them until my book came out and I was being asked what my next writing project would be. For want of anything else to say I would reply BASTARDS, and the response was so positive that what had started as a whim began to take on substance.

Bastards is now available in Hardback (£14.99), and also on audio, read by Sheila herself (£13.99) - click here for more information.

DAVE BARTRAM: A ROCK 'N' ROLL NIGHTMARE!

Fantom is pleased to announce we shall be publishing Dave Bartram’s rock’n’roll nightmare memoir entitled The Boys of Summer!

During the 1970's, teddy-boy draped rock & roll band SHOWADDYWADDY had a run of chart success unparalled by any other artist or band. In 2005 they were still touring, but by then the heady days of teeny-bop hysteria were long gone. Offered a summer run of 33 holiday camp dates, the band took the fast buck and subsequently entered into uncharted territory…

“Three days into the tour whilst chatting with the boys, we discussed what a fantastic ‘fly on the wall’ documentary the tour would make, and for the first time in my lengthy career I began diarising the uproarious daily events” says lead singer (and later manager) Dave Bartram. Roughly half-way through the stint, after experiencing tragedy, frustration and innumerable ‘you couldn’t make it up’ dilemmas, I just had to put pen to paper and show readers just how unglamorous the world of rock & roll can be!”

From experiencing 'life in the fast lane,' they were about to undergo 'a breakdown on the hard-shoulder!'

The Boys of Summer is not written with only music fans in mind,” continues Dave “…it is largely a humorous account of a bunch of musicians trying to come to terms with rather unfamiliar surroundings, along with a series of quite unimaginable events. This is a book that will appeal to people with a broad sense of humour, and to well-oiled holiday-makers perched on a couch by the pool in sunnier climbs!”

In this bitter-sweet account Dave candidly recollects the extraordinary occurrences of 10 weeks in the UK's bucket & spade resorts, which strained every emotion to breaking point!

The Boys of Summer will be available in special edition hardback; exclusively direct from Fantom this December, priced £19.99! Pre-order now!

MARY TAMM (1950 - 2012)

Chip butties and Yorkshire tea. Not something you'd instantly associate with Mary Tamm. But that was indeed the less than starry request Mary made when we worked together for the first time, recording an audio book. But then there were so many varied and beautiful shades to Mary's character, that it took some time to get close enough to be able to appreciate them all.

Equally as home in a Whimpy bar or dining at The Ivy, or drinking a builder's brew or a sophisticated soya latte, Mary was the sum of her patchwork background; her Estonia parents, her Northern upbringing, and then her life in London. To all around she was an exceptionally glamorous and sophisticated lady, but to us, she was our funny and brilliant friend. And we shall miss her, and all the Tammspam.
